Leaving Your Dog With a Professional Vs Friend: Pros and Cons

Posted on

If you do not travel often, you may not have someone that you leave your dog with regularly. Some people have a friend or family member who lives close to them with who they can leave their beloved pets, though for some this may not be the best option. Fortunately, there are now many apps and locations around the nation where you can hire a stranger to watch your pet for a small fee. If you are trying to decide whether or not the cost of hiring a professional is worth it, here is a list of pros and cons that may help you decide.

Leaving Your Pets with Friend/Family:

Pros

The major pro of leaving your pet with a friend or family member is that the entire stay will likely be very affordable. If you are on a strict budget, a close friend is the way to go. Your pet is also likely to feel very comfortable with someone they are familiar with.

Cons

If your close acquaintance has other animals or a busy life they may not try extremely hard to take the best care of your pet. Hopefully, they will, but since they are not getting paid much, they may not try very hard. The old adage 'you get what you pay for' might just be true.

Leaving Your Pets with a Professional:

Pros

Many professionals stay in business and get new clients based on the reviews they receive from their clients. Consequently, they exert a lot of time and energy into making sure that your pet has a great experience. Depending on the dog boarding facility you choose, they may have obstacle courses or large grassy areas where your pet can run and play.

Cons

Some boarding facilities can be quite pricey, though it really depends on the area, their availability, and the length of your stay. If you are looking for a more affordable boarder, there are individual boarders who may be willing to keep your dog for a lower fee. Another thing to keep in mind is that you may need to schedule your pet's stay well in advance in order to ensure availability.

In conclusion, taking the time to really think about who is the best candidate to care for your pet may help them to have a better experience while you are away. If you are unsure about who to go with, you may want to go and tour dog boarding facilities in your area.
